What is Havening?
When an event or experience is perceived as traumatic or very stressful by a person, it is recorded permanently in
the brain, often with life altering consequences. However, research from the field of neuroscience has shown us how
it's possible to modify the emotional aspect of a memory. It is easy to imagine that information received by the senses
can change our mood, thoughts and behaviour (for example; A piece of music, the smell of food or a hug), but most
of the time these changes are only temporary.
Is it possible to use sensory input to effect permanent change within the brain?
The Havening Techniques is a psychosensory therapeutic method designed to change neural pathways within the brain to de-traumatise a distressing memory and permanently remove its negative effects from both mind and body.
The Havening Techniques process does require the application of touch in a specific way to the face, arms and hands (although access to all three of these areas is not required for the therapy to work). I can appreciate this is a traumatic thought in itself for some people and you, the client, will be able to decide at any point within the session who provides that touch. The touch can be applied by me, you or even a trusted friend or family member (following some basic instruction from me) whilst I facilitate the process. Havening differs from 'talking therapies' such as counselling in that if you are not comfortable discussing the traumatic memory with me, Havening is just as effective when the session is content free - you don't have to talk about anything you don't want to.
The Havening Techniques are powerful tools that can be used to treat the physical and mental effects of traumatic and/or stressful memories. Please do not attempt to use The Havening Techniques on yourself for a serious traumatic memory or if you have any psychological disorders.
Even if you choose not to see me for Havening therapy, always ensure you see a certified Havening Techniques Practitioner. These are listed on the official www.havening.org website. As with all forms of therapy there are, unfortunately, individuals out there claiming to know how to apply the Havening Techniques correctly when they don't.
How was Havening developed?
Dr. Ronald Ruden has developed The Havening Techniques over the last three decades through his translation of advances in the field of neuroscience into a new method of healing. Dr Ruden has also written a series of books around the consequences and treatment of trauma. He continues to explore ways in which we can use neuroscience to treat illness.
